How to Care for Your Leather Wallet, Belt and Bag

Tanwood leather - journal-open

Good leather can last decades with a little care. These simple habits will keep your wallet, belt and bag looking their best.

1. Wipe it clean

Dust and dirt dry leather out. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth every couple of weeks. For marks, use a slightly damp cloth and let it air-dry.

2. Condition it a few times a year

Leather is skin and needs moisture. Apply a small amount of leather cream or conditioner with a soft cloth every three to six months, or when it starts to look dry. Test on a hidden spot first.

3. Keep it away from water and heat

If your leather gets wet, blot it with a towel and let it dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a hair dryer or leave it in direct sun, which can make it crack.

4. Do not overfill it

Overstuffed wallets and bags stretch out of shape. Carry only what you need.

5. Store it properly

Store bags stuffed with paper so they hold their shape, inside a cotton dust bag, not plastic, so the leather can breathe. Hang or roll belts rather than folding them sharply.

6. Avoid harsh products

Do not use alcohol, household cleaners or baby wipes on leather. They strip its natural oils.

7. Enjoy the patina

Small scratches and colour changes are part of real leather’s character. Many fade with use and conditioning, and over time your piece develops a unique patina.
